Heather Unbehaun, who was accused of abducting her daughter from a suburb in Illinois six years ago, has surrendered to authorities, ending a case that gained significant public attention. Unbehaun is currently in custody at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in Illinois, facing child abduction charges. She has not been granted bail.
Kayla Unbehaun, her daughter, was found safe in North Carolina and reunited with her father before Heather surrendered. Authorities in North Carolina apprehended Heather based on an outstanding Illinois warrant for kidnapping and child abduction. Initially held on a $250,000 bond, Heather was able to secure her release by posting bail on Tuesday, according to Samantha Booth, a spokesperson for the Asheville Police Department.
The situation began on July 4, 2017, when Heather informed Kayla’s father, Ryan Iserka, that they were going camping after a parade in South Elgin, Illinois. However, they never returned. Following their disappearance, a felony warrant was issued for Heather’s arrest.
The case saw a significant breakthrough when a viewer in Asheville recognized Kayla from the Netflix series Unsolved Mysteries and promptly notified law enforcement. This tip ultimately led to the mother’s apprehension.
Ryan Iserka expressed deep gratitude towards the police and the many supporters who aided in his efforts to reunite with his daughter. Heather Unbehaun is expected to make her next court appearance on Wednesday morning at the Kane County Judicial Center.
