Tragedy struck in 1962 during the filming of How the West Was Won. Morgan, performing a dangerous stunt, was severely injured by a moving log train, resulting in the loss of his leg. The accident nearly cost him his life and placed a tremendous financial burden on the family. De Carlo, who had largely stepped back from acting, returned to work to pay for the mounting medical expenses.

“Before the accident, we were on the verge of breaking up,” De Carlo admitted. “But when they took me to the hospital, I just choked up, and only one thought filled my mind: I don’t want my husband to die.”

The couple stayed together until 1973, weathering the challenges brought on by the accident and the pressures of Hollywood life.

Heartbreak and Final Years

Another devastating blow came in 1997 when De Carlo’s son Michael passed away at the age of 39 due to brain damage caused by a stroke. The loss deeply affected her, and she never returned to acting after completing her last film in 1995. In 1998, De Carlo suffered a minor stroke, which her other son attributed to the stress and grief of losing Michael.
