On November 4, 2023, the community of Davie, Florida, was struck with heartbreak as 4-year-old Knox MacEwen tragically passed away while participating in a 5K run. According to NBC 6 South Florida, Knox suffered cardiac arrest during the event and was rushed to Memorial Hospital Miramar, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Knox was an active participant in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program at Western High School in Davie. The JROTC program, a federally sponsored initiative by the U.S. Armed Forces, aims to instill leadership skills, self-confidence, and self-discipline in young students. However, the promising young boy’s life was cut short in what should have been a routine and positive experience.
A Community in Mourning
The news of Knox’s passing sent waves of sorrow through the Wildcat community. Western High School Principal Jimmy Arrojo expressed his deep sadness in a heartfelt message to students, families, and staff.
“I regret to inform you of the awful news that has affected our Wildcat community,” Arrojo wrote. “One of our JROTC students passed away early this morning after being taken to the hospital. I want to extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends, teachers, and fellow students during this difficult time of loss.”
Recognizing the emotional toll this tragedy has had on students and faculty, the school has arranged for grief counselors to be available on campus throughout the week.
“I ask our Wildcat community to come together in prayer and support for the family during this time of profound sorrow,” Arrojo added.
Remembering Knox’s Impact
Beyond his involvement in JROTC, Knox was a beloved member of Cooper City’s Crossway Church. His kindness, humor, and warmth left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Pastor Jon Elswick spoke about the young boy’s impact on the church community and the deep sorrow felt by those who loved him.
“When you have a tragedy like this, and someone as loved as Knox, the ripple effects go all the way through our church community,” Elswick shared. “We have students who were friends with him, family members who were close to his family—it’s been a really difficult time.”
The pastor also reflected on a conversation he had with Knox’s father just days before the tragedy. His father had described Knox as “the best of us,” a sentiment that truly encapsulated the young boy’s loving and caring nature.
“I love that phrase because if you knew Knox, that’s who he was,” Elswick continued. “He was a loving kid, a caring kid, a funny kid—someone who brought joy to everyone around him.”
A Life Gone Too Soon
The sudden loss of Knox has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him. Though his time on Earth was brief, he touched the lives of many with his bright personality and genuine kindness. His passing serves as a sobering reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
As the Davie community mourns, people continue to rally around Knox’s family, offering support, love, and prayers during this painful time. The Western High School JROTC program, Cooper City’s Crossway Church, and countless friends and family members will forever hold Knox in their hearts.
