When it comes to protecting their children, most parents would do anything to ensure their little ones feel safe, accepted, and loved. For Celine Casey and her partner, that commitment took on a deeply personal and emotional meaning shortly after the birth of their daughter, Vienna Brookshaw, in the United Kingdom in April 2021.
From the moment Celine first laid eyes on her baby girl, she noticed a distinct birthmark located between Vienna’s eyebrows on her forehead. Doctors later identified it as congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN), a rare condition that causes a cluster of benign pigment-producing cells to form. While CMN typically doesn’t pose any direct threat to physical health, it can grow and change over time. And for Celine, the issue wasn’t only medical—it was emotional.
Celine’s concern was rooted in the long-term impact the birthmark might have on Vienna’s emotional well-being. Although her daughter was healthy, she feared the visible mark might make Vienna the target of teasing, judgment, or self-consciousness as she grew older. Celine wanted to give Vienna the best chance to feel confident and comfortable in her own skin—and that meant looking into options for having the birthmark removed.
“I was worried that if we didn’t take action, Vienna might one day ask why we didn’t help her when she was younger,” Celine explained. “We love her exactly the way she is, and we always will—but we also want to protect her from the kind of scrutiny that can leave lasting emotional scars.”
As Vienna began growing, the family quickly realized others were taking notice of the birthmark too. Strangers would stare or treat her differently than other babies. Celine noticed that her daughter wasn’t always approached with the same warmth as other infants, and this only deepened her determination to remove the mark before it became a bigger issue in Vienna’s life.
But there was a hurdle—the National Health Service (NHS) declined to approve the surgery. Since the birthmark wasn’t causing any medical harm, it was deemed a cosmetic procedure and thus not covered. Not willing to give up, Vienna’s parents took matters into their own hands and launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the money needed for private surgery.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. In just one day, generous supporters donated over $52,000 to help cover the cost of the procedure. However, due to rising healthcare expenses during the COVID-19 pandemic, the total needed for the surgery grew higher than expected. Celine and her partner returned to their fundraising efforts, seeking an additional $27,000 to reach their goal.
“People have things about themselves that make them feel insecure,” Celine said. “The doctors told us Vienna wasn’t old enough to be affected yet, but we saw it differently. Kids start noticing differences early, and Vienna would be starting school at age three. We just wanted to do what was best for her.”
Today, Vienna is two years old and thriving. Her birthmark has been successfully removed through a series of three procedures, leaving behind only a small scar on her forehead. According to her mom, the scar is barely noticeable, and Vienna is doing wonderfully. “She’s gorgeous,” Celine proudly shares, and the family continues to provide updates about Vienna’s healing journey.
The family even traveled to London for a follow-up appointment to have the small scar evaluated. After careful assessment, doctors confirmed that Vienna’s skin was healing beautifully and that no further surgeries or treatments would be necessary. The little girl is now free to grow up without the mark that once sparked so many questions and concerns.
Celine and her partner’s unwavering dedication serves as a testament to the lengths loving parents will go to in order to support their children’s future—physically, emotionally, and socially. What began as a source of anxiety turned into a story of hope, generosity, and parental love. And for Vienna, it became a story of empowerment before she even understood the meaning of the word.
Supporters from all over continue to send their well wishes to the young girl, celebrating her health and cheering her on as she grows. Her journey is a touching reminder that sometimes the most meaningful choices parents make aren’t about fixing what’s broken—but about doing everything possible to give their children the confidence to shine.
Please feel free to share Vienna’s inspiring story with others—because a little love, awareness, and community support can make all the difference in a child’s life.
