In today’s world, treating everyone equally, regardless of their race, religion, or appearance, is often viewed as one of the most important values. Growing up, my parents taught me the importance of respecting every person I meet, unless they give me a reason not to. I believe that judging others based on their looks or differences is not only unfair but also wrong.
Sadly, there are people who struggle to control their negative actions. They see those who don’t look like them and choose to mock or insult them. Worse yet, some individuals quickly doubt the capabilities of those with disabilities or illnesses without giving them a fair chance.
One such person who faced this kind of prejudice is Joey Wittkugle. Joey’s story is a powerful reminder that we should never judge someone by their appearance alone. Born with Down Syndrome, Joey was dismissed by many who underestimated him. But his life is a testament to resilience and love.
Bobbi Wittkugle, from Struthers, Ohio, vividly remembers the day she welcomed her son, Joey, into the world. It was a moment that presented her with a difficult choice. Joey was born with Down Syndrome, and the doctors were not optimistic about his future.
Shortly after Joey’s birth, a doctor came to Bobbi with heartbreaking news. He told her that Joey might never walk, talk, or even recognize her. Additionally, they informed her that Joey would likely only live until he was 11 years old.
Hearing this shattered Bobbi’s heart. At that time, there was less understanding of Down Syndrome compared to today, and it was challenging for many to accept or embrace children with genetic conditions. But despite the uncertainty and fear, one thing remained clear for Bobbi: her love for her son was unwavering.
Seeking comfort, Bobbi confided in a priest, who reassured her that Joey was a gift from God. From that moment on, Bobbi never doubted her decision to love and care for her son. Together, they faced every challenge that came their way.
On June 29, 2023, Joey celebrated his 63rd birthday—far surpassing the doctor’s grim prediction that he wouldn’t live past 11. His family marked the occasion with a festive birthday parade in his hometown. Bobbi, now 90 years old, reflected on the significance of this milestone. “If you meet one of our children, don’t ignore them like in the past,” she said. “They are human beings, gifts from God, and they deserve the same love they give to you.”
Joey’s birthday was filled with all his favorite things: cars, trucks, motorcycles, and even local emergency personnel who came to wish him well. As the parade passed by, Joey couldn’t hold back his tears of joy, but his smile stayed strong throughout the celebration.
Sitting next to him, his mother gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek and whispered, “I adore you.” Three simple words that carry a lifetime of meaning.
Stories like Joey’s remind us that every child deserves love and acceptance. And I think we can all agree on that!
