The family of Saoírse Ruane announced this morning that the brave young girl from Galway, whose inspiring presence on The Late Late Toy Show captured the hearts of people across Ireland, passed away on Tuesday.
A Courageous Battle Against Cancer
Saoírse’s journey with cancer began in November 2019 when she was diagnosed after experiencing persistent pain from what initially seemed like a minor ankle injury. Further tests revealed a malignant osteosarcoma tumor in her tibia. To save her life, doctors had to amputate her leg in 2020.
Despite the immense challenges she faced, Saoírse refused to let her illness define her. She first gained national attention in 2020 when she appeared on The Late Late Toy Show alongside host Ryan Tubridy. Her strength, resilience, and unbreakable spirit inspired an entire nation, turning her into a beloved figure in Ireland.
A Family’s Heartbreaking Loss
Saoírse’s parents, Roseanna and Ollie, along with her younger sister, Farrah-Rose, are devastated by her passing.
“After a long, brave, and dignified battle, our hearts are shattered to share that our beautiful little Saoírse took her final breath in our arms on Tuesday,” the grieving family shared in a heartfelt statement.
“We are immensely grateful for the love and support from our incredible community, who have kept Saoírse in their thoughts and prayers these past few weeks. Today, we also think of all those whose lives she touched. We know how much she was loved by so many.”
Addressing the disease that took their daughter too soon, they wrote: “Cancer, you stole her from us. You robbed us of our dreams, our life together. Things will never be the same again.”
They concluded their message with a plea for privacy: “As we take our final journey with our beautiful girl, please give us some space.”
Outpouring of Tributes from Across Ireland
Tributes have poured in from all corners of Ireland, including from prominent figures in entertainment and politics. President Michael D. Higgins expressed his deep condolences, stating, “Saoírse Ruane’s generosity and courage touched everyone who knew her story. Her impact will never be forgotten.”
Tánaiste Micheál Martin also paid his respects, recalling his first meeting with Saoírse and her mother at Croke Park. “I will never forget her beautiful smile and her deep love for GAA. Her legacy, including the Toy Show Appeal, is an extraordinary gift she left behind. We mourn this heartbreaking loss alongside her family and friends.”
Ryan Tubridy, the former Late Late Show host, was among those who shared their grief. He formed a close bond with Saoírse’s family after her memorable Toy Show appearance. “The world is a poorer place without her. We connected from the moment we met. She touched the lives of so many and brought hope to hundreds of children in Ireland.”
Saoírse’s Unbreakable Spirit
Throughout her illness, Saoírse remained determined to make the most of every moment. Some of her biggest wishes came true—she got to watch Manchester United play at Old Trafford and visit Disneyland, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Her story of perseverance resonated deeply, inspiring people across the country.
Her family provided a difficult update in November 2023, revealing that her cancer had returned. A recurrent tumor in her left lung was discovered earlier that year, and in a cruel twist, the disease had also spread to her right lung. Doctors informed the family that Saoírse would have to undergo yet another round of chemotherapy, making it her most difficult battle yet.
Her mother, Roseanna, shared at the time, “Our world fell apart again. To say we are devastated is not enough. She has fought so many battles—it just isn’t fair.”
A Nation Mourns
Following the news of Saoírse’s passing, an outpouring of condolences flooded in from across Ireland.
Ireland’s rugby captain, Peter O’Mahony, shared his sympathy, calling her an “inspiration.” Kathryn Thomas of RTÉ wrote, “Rosanna, I am so incredibly sorry. Your beautiful daughter changed all our lives. Her smile lit up the world.”
FM Today DJ Declan Pierce, who had formed a special friendship with Saoírse through his radio show, posted a heartfelt message: “My beautiful friend, my heart is broken. Getting to know you was the best part of my job. I will love you forever.”
Singer RuthAnne expressed her grief on her blog: “Heartbroken. Her bravery knew no bounds. She was truly extraordinary. I am so grateful I had the honor of meeting and singing alongside her. What a privilege.”
Saoírse’s Legacy Lives On
RTÉ 2FM broadcaster Roz Purcell spoke of the profound impact Saoírse had on the nation: “She left an incredible mark on Ireland. No one will forget her. In just 12 years, she accomplished so much. May she rest in peace.”
Saoírse’s funeral will be held on Sunday at 1:45 p.m. at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Kiltullagh. She will lie in repose at home on Friday, March 8, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A statement from her family also noted that a bus service would be available from the Bullaun Church parking lot (H62 YH66), urging visitors to use this transportation and follow the guidance of stewards.
While her time on earth was far too short, Saoírse Ruane’s incredible courage, kindness, and unwavering spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her story. Her legacy is one of resilience, hope, and love—an inspiration that will never fade.
