Neglected Dog Undergoes Stunning Transformation After Grooming: A Story of Second Chances
Many stray and neglected dogs suffer silently as their fur becomes tangled and matted, causing them significant distress. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple haircut to change a dog’s life forever. That’s exactly what happened to one severely neglected dog, whose transformation has given him a fresh start.
On July 16, the South Plains SPCA shared the heartbreaking story of the “worst case of dog neglect we have ever encountered.” This 6-year-old dog was found in deplorable condition, with matted fur so thick it had become a part of his skin.
“The dog had rotten skin spots, and his fur was matted to the point it had grown into his skin. His nails were two inches long,” the SPCA reported. The dog, later named Matt due to his matted fur, had been suffering for years.
Kim Moyers, the president of South Plains SPCA, expressed her shock to KLBK-TV, saying, “His hair growth represents about five years of matting. It’s horrifying to think he might have been seen in public like this, yet ignored. I’ve never witnessed anything like it.”
Once rescued, Matt was in such pain that he yelped each time they attempted to trim his fur. The SPCA had no choice but to sedate him. They discovered a collar and leash embedded within the tangled mess, and in total, they shaved off three pounds of fur — the result of half a decade of neglect.
“There were thousands of stickers, sticks, grass, and even beetles tangled in his fur,” the SPCA detailed. His tightly matted fur caused severe bruising on his body, but despite all his hardships, Matt tested negative for heartworm and tick-borne diseases, thanks to his thick coat that kept ticks out.
Although Matt still faces a long road to recovery, including necessary dental work, his life has already changed in remarkable ways. After grooming, he’s become a completely different dog.
“Once we had one of our professional groomers, who is also a SPCA foster, give him a proper grooming session, he looked amazing,” said Tori Houston, Matt’s foster mom, in an interview with People. “He is the most stunning dog I’ve ever seen.”
Since waking up from his makeover, Matt has been enjoying a happier and healthier life. “He went for his very first walk without all that bulk of hair, likely for the first time in five years,” Houston told KLBK-TV. “His little bottom was wiggling, and his tail was wagging. He was so joyful.”
Currently, Matt is being fostered by Houston, and once he fully recovers, he’ll be ready for adoption.
Matt’s transformation is nothing short of miraculous. It’s heartbreaking that he suffered so long, but now he’s finally safe, clean, and on the path to a brighter future.
