The British royal family has been navigating an extraordinarily busy and emotional period. Over the past month, two significant health announcements have deeply affected the household: King Charles received a cancer diagnosis, and Princess Kate Middleton underwent major abdominal surgery that will require an extended recovery period.
While the Princess of Wales has been able to work from home occasionally, Kensington Palace confirmed that she is not expected to return to her full royal duties until around Easter. Her surgery and ongoing recovery have brought significant changes to the family’s daily routine—and not without personal challenges for her husband, Prince William.
When Kate made the difficult decision to undergo abdominal surgery, Prince William immediately took on more responsibility at home. With Kate hospitalized at the London Clinic, William juggled his royal obligations while taking care of their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—who missed seeing their mother dearly during her time away.
Fortunately, William had the support of the family’s longtime nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. Borrallo, who has been with the family since Prince George was just eight months old, played a crucial role in keeping things running smoothly. According to sources who spoke to Hello Magazine, Maria is known for her complete dedication to her role. She remains unmarried and fully committed to the Cambridge family, leading many to describe her as “married to the job.”
When the Duke and Duchess are away, Borrallo has full authority over decisions regarding the children. Trained at the prestigious Norland College in Bath, Maria combines firmness with kindness, maintaining discipline without ever resorting to harsh punishment. As a royal insider once put it, Kate, William, and Maria have a unique ability to enforce boundaries with the children in a way that still feels gentle and loving.
When Maria was first appointed, Kensington Palace released a rare public statement: “Maria is a full-time nanny who started work with us recently and will be accompanying the Duke and Duchess and Prince George to New Zealand and Australia. The Duke and Duchess are obviously delighted she has chosen to join their family.”
Parenting expert Jo Frost also praised Maria’s impact, telling Hello Magazine that her presence has been invaluable. “Because of her nurturing ways and wonderful service to the family, the children are in good and steady hands. This gives William the freedom to be a present father, fulfill his royal duties at home, and offer the emotional support that his wife needs.”
Yet even with help, balancing personal and professional life has not been easy for Prince William. According to royal commentator Angela Levin, William is facing a “difficult time” managing the demands of family, public service, and personal emotion. To complicate matters, William’s relationship with his brother, Prince Harry, remains strained. Levin shared with GB News that William grew used to Harry being “rude, cruel, and attacking his wife,” making reconciliation extremely difficult. “It’s hard to start over when so much hurt has been caused,” Levin explained.
GB News anchor Isabel Webster added that William likely feels especially isolated during this tough period. “This is a man who lost his mother in a tragic accident, who is estranged from his brother, who recently lost his grandmother—the Queen, someone who deeply understood his responsibility—and now both his wife and father are facing serious health issues,” Webster observed. “That’s a heavy emotional burden for anyone.”
Levin further recalled a time when Harry told her he and William were extremely close, bonded by shared difficult experiences. Sadly, that closeness appears to be a thing of the past.
Despite these emotional challenges, Prince William has continued to fulfill his royal responsibilities. On Wednesday evening, he attended the London Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner, where he delivered a heartfelt speech. In it, he thanked attendees for their support and well wishes for both his father and his wife.
“Good evening to all of you. Thank you for being here. I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for the kind messages of support for my father and Catherine, especially over the last few days. It means a great deal to us all,” he said. With a touch of humor, William added, “It’s fair to say the past few weeks have been rather focused on medical matters. So I thought I’d come to an air ambulance event to get away from it all.”
Earlier that day at Windsor Castle, William presided over an investiture ceremony, awarding honors to more than fifty recipients. One honoree, Patricia Sprouse, shared her experience on LinkedIn, mentioning that Prince William spoke warmly about the care Kate is receiving from “two wonderful and compassionate Filipino nurses.”
In times of personal hardship, the royal family’s dedication to duty often shines even brighter. Prince William’s unwavering commitment to his family and country continues to inspire many around the world as he navigates one of the most challenging seasons of his life.
